Monitoring it all..
November 10th, 2008I have recently switched to another job and one of my tasks was to find a good monitoring system, since the one currently depolyed is a mismatch of different ones, it does the job, but we want to try and have everything under one umbrella so to speak.
So what did I use? Thats a bit of a story…
NAGIOS
Synonymous with monitoring Nagios is usually a the port of call for any task like this, but its not the most friendly when it comes to configuration, so I installed Groundwork to elevate some of that potentiall trouble, Groundwork is a web based GUI for Nagios, while it was very easy to install and get up and running it just didnt click with me when I was using it, seemed cumbersome to me.
ZENOSS
Another web based monitoring system, far nicer than Groundwork, had trouble though getting it to use SNMP on the Cisco routers, so my impatiance got the better of me and I decided to look again.
HYPERIC
I love pictures, screenshots and from the website Hyperic looked grand, I was kind of concerned that it was wrote in JAVA and didnt really like it much that I had to install an agent on the machine that I wanted to monitor, but I gave it a whirl and loved it! It takes a while to get used to the terminolgy, but once grasped its a very powerful tool that detects everything that the agent is running on, i.e. whether its an Exchange server, MS SQL server, it readly then gives me granualar information about the services that server provides.
So for now, Hyperic is it, does everything I want it to do and more, It allows me to get my hands dirty and yet still spare me from sinking huge chunks of time into getting it working and monitoring my network and its respective devices
Ill keep you posted on my progress and how its fitting into our grand scheme of things.

Doing my morning browsing before I set into work mode for the day I found this wonderful article at
